    Hi,

    I am using the destinations theme and I am getting several crawl errors from google as below which seem to have something to do with a javascript link in the theme:

    Soft 404

    1 wp-content/themes/wp_hot_destinations 9/19/16

    2 wp-content/themes/wp_hot_destinations/

    See attachment: error 1

    When I look up the error it appears to refer to several pages on my website: error 2 and error 3

    When I view the source code on any of these pages the url google is complaining about is found in this line of code:

    <script type=”text/javascript”>
    var _THEME_HOME = ‘http://holy-land-tours.com/wp-content/themes/wp_hot_destinations’;
    </script>

    See attachment: error 4

    Can you please tell me how to correct this issue.

    Thank you

    Nothing new has been added to the website – all of this has just started to happen itself.

    Hello,

    I don’t think these errors will have significant impact to your SEO. But if you are keen to fix them, please create an empty HTML file and name it as “index.html” and upload this file to /wp-content/themes/wp_hot_destinations

    Thanks,
    Milos

    Hi,

    I tried the fix you suggested and cleared the google soft 404 errors from Search Console. For two days our site re-appeared in the google search results on page 8 for keywords “Holyland Tours” but after two days the soft 404 returned and now we have vanished from the google search results. I contacted Google Local Business Support who looked into our listing appearing / disappearing from the google search listings and they said that the soft 404 errors are causing the site to drop off the google search results as google deem soft 404 errors more serious that standard 404 errors. They suggest I get the errors fixed and then they will request google to re-crawl the website.

    The index.html file did not sort out the issue – can you suggest another fix.

    Thanks

    Hello,

    Try adding redirection rules in .htaccess file (in site root folder). In example, adding this line:

    redirect 301 /wp-content/themes/wp_hot_destinations http://holy-land-tours.com

    It will redirect trafic from one soft 404 link to the home page of your site. You should do the same for all 404 links.

    Thanks,
    Milos

    Hello,

    Ok, I see. Please cancel the .htaccess changes you made.

    The folder “/wp-content/themes/wp_hot_destinations” is a folder that should not be indexed by crawlers at all. Perhaps the solution for your problem is to disallow this folder in robots.txt file, like this:

    User-agent: *
    Disallow: /wp-content/themes/wp_hot_destinations/

    robots.txt file should be in your site root. If you already have this file, just add disallow command(s) under the “User-agent: *” command.

    Thanks,
    Milos
